Bariatric Surgery in Lake Buena Vista Florida

Patients struggling with medical obesity face daily challenges and threats to their health, as well as to their self-esteem and appearance. Weight loss surgery is an option for these patients and, thanks to advanced surgical techniques, it is now a practical option for those patients for whom the first line treatments have failed.

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a tool that helps medically obese Americans safely lose excess weight. Two common weight loss surgery procedures performed in our practice are the gastric sleeve, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, or simply sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass surgery. Both are performed using laparoscopic surgery techniques. A physician experienced in bariatric surgery and laparoscopic surgery techniques will determine which of the types of weight loss surgery procedures is best for a patient. Post-surgery, patients receive follow-up services in a bariatric clinic setting.

Gastric Sleeve Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery

Patients often ask "What is gastric bypass surgery" and "What is gastric sleeve surgery". Both are types of bariatric procedures designed to help patients significantly and safely lose excess weight and improve their obesity-related medical conditions. Gastric sleeve surgery reduces stomach capacity without bypassing any part of the digestive tract, leaving normal absorption of nutrients intact. Gastric bypass surgery results in a more dramatic weight loss, but it is a more complex procedure. Since it bypasses a section of the small intestine, it affects normal absorption of nutrients and requires patients to add dietary supplements to their post-surgery diet.

Gastric Band Surgery

A third type of bariatric weight loss surgery is gastric band surgery, also called lap band surgery. During this laparoscopic procedure a silicone band is placed around the stomach. Following a patient's recovery, the band is inflated, reducing the volume of food the stomach can hold.

Gastric band surgery, a decade ago, was the most commonly performed weight loss surgery. Today it is far less common as the record of safety and effectiveness established by gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery techniques has made them the leading bariatric surgery procedures.

The Bariatric Surgery Diet

Following gastric bypass surgery patients are required to follow strict diets that include dietary supplements. Since gastric bypass surgery bypasses part of the digestive system and so affects normal absorption of nutrients, without the supplements patients may become malnourished.

Gastric sleeve surgery patients must commit to a bariatric surgery diet following surgery. While dietary supplements are not required, a strict diet is necessary to maximize the benefits of the surgery.

Our practice and offers patients advice, council and encouragement before and after bariatric weight loss surgery in a bariatric clinic setting.

Bariatric Surgery Cost

Many insurance policies cover some, or all, of a patient's gastric bypass cost, or gastric sleeve cost. How much of your gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery cost will your insurance cover? Our insurance office can help you determine the exact insurance coverage, including any out-of-pocket expenses that might be incurred. Insurance coverage is dependent on a patient's specific policy coverages, their body mass index, and the presence or absence of other medical conditions.

Other Surgery Procedures

In addition to bariatric weight loss surgery, our practice offers other general surgery procedures. These include gallbladder surgery, hernia and thyroid surgery, as well as some vascular surgery and vein treatment procedures. Many of these are also performed using laparoscopic surgery techniques.
