Melbourne Village Bariatric Surgery

Obesity has become a major health concern for millions of Americans, more so for those who have tried and not succeeded to lose excess weight. Bariatric surgery is a treatment option when first line treatments, like diet, exercise and behavior modification, fail to result in weight loss.

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is a procedure that helps patients succeed in safely losing excess weight by reducing stomach capacity and limiting the patient's food intake. Today, bariatric surgeries are usually performed using laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure.

Several weight loss surgery options are available. Which is best for a given patient is determined by a physician experienced in bariatric surgery and laparoscopic surgery techniques. Our practice performs two of the most common options, gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass. We provide follow-up weight loss surgery services in a bariatric clinic setting.

Gastric Sleeve Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery

What is gastric bypass surgery and how does it differ from gastric sleeve surgery? Gastric bypass surgery reduces stomach capacity by bypassing part of the small intestine. In bypassing part of the digestive tract, it also affects the normal process of the body's absorption of nutrients. Of these two types of weight loss surgery, gastric bypass is the more complex. While it results in a more dramatic weight loss, the procedure requires patients commit to taking dietary supplements, else they might become malnourished.

Gastric sleeve surgery also reduces stomach capacity, but the procedure does not bypass part of the digestive tract, nor does it affect the normal process of the body's absorption of nutrients. Both procedures are effective tools used to produce significant weight loss and improve obesity-related medical conditions.

    Gastric Band Surgery

Gastric band surgery, or lap band surgery, is another form of bariatric weight loss surgery. During this laparoscopic surgery, an inflatable silicone band is placed around the stomach. After a patient has recovered from the procedure, the band is inflated, constricting stomach capacity and reducing the volume of food the stomach can hold.

Gastric band was the most common bariatric surgery a decade ago. Today, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery are the leading bariatric weight loss surgical procedures. These procedures have an established record of safety and effectiveness that has increased their use as tools to produce significant and safe weight loss.

Gastric bypass patients must follow a bariatric surgery diet that includes dietary supplements. Since the procedure bypasses part of the digestive tract, the small intestine, they may become malnourished without them.

Gastric sleeve patients are not required to take supplements but they must follow a bariatric surgery diet to maximize the benefits of surgery. Our practice helps patients of these surgeries in a bariatric clinic setting, where they can receive advice, council and encouragement before and after their weight loss surgery.

Bariatric Surgery Cost

What does gastric bypass surgery cost, or gastric sleeve cost? Insurance coverages vary from patient to patient. Policies typically cover most, if not all, of the costs associated with weight loss surgery procedures, depending on body mass index and the presence or absence of other medical conditions.

How much of the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass cost will your policy cover? We can assist with these insurance questions and help you determine your exact coverages.

Other Surgery Procedures

Besides bariatric surgeries our practice performs other general surgery procedures. Most are performed using laparoscopic surgery techniques. These include vascular surgery and vein treatment procedures, hernia and thyroid surgery, as well as gallbladder surgery.
