Bariatric Surgery in Winter Garden
Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, is available for those patients with medical obesity for whom diet, exercise and behavior modification measures have failed. Bariatric surgery is now an option for those whose health and wellbeing are threatened by medical obesity.
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric weight loss surgery procedures involve using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery techniques. Weight loss surgery is performed to help patients reduce their food intake amount and safely lose excess weight. Several types of loss surgery are available. Two of the more common procedures performed in our practice are gastric bypass surgery and gastric sleeve surgery, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy and sleeve gastrectomy. Which procedure is recommended is decided by a physician experienced in bariatric surgery and laparoscopic surgery procedures. Post-surgery, our practice follows up with bariatric clinic services.
Gastric Sleeve Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery
What is gastric bypass surgery? Gastric bypass surgery reduces stomach capacity by bypassing part of the small intestine. In doing so it disrupts the normal absorption of nutrients. How does it differ from gastric sleeve surgery? Gastric sleeve surgery reduces stomach capacity without bypassing the small intestine. This procedure does not affect normal absorption of nutrients.
Gastric bypass surgery produces a more dramatic weight loss, but it is also more complex and requires dietary supplements after the weight loss surgery. Both procedures are effective in helping patients to achieve significant weight loss and improve obesity-related medical conditions.
Gastric Band Surgery in Winter Garden
Another type of bariatric surgery is gastric band surgery, or lap band surgery. This procedure involves placing an inflatable silicon band around the stomach and then inflating it after the patient has recovered from the surgery. This band, once inflated, constricts the stomach thereby reducing the amount of food it can hold.
Although gastric band was the most common bariatric surgery a decade ago, today, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery are the leading types of bariatric weight loss surgeries. These procedures have an established record of safety and effectiveness in helping patients safely reach their weight goals.
The Bariatric Surgery Diet
Gastric bypass surgery patients must follow a bariatric surgery diet that includes dietary supplements. They may become malnourished without them since the procedure bypasses part of the digestive tract.
Appointments and Honors
Patients who have had a gastric sleeve procedure do not require supplements, however, they must follow a bariatric surgery diet plan designed to maximize the benefit gained through the weight loss surgery.
Our bariatric clinic offers services to patients before and after any of the weight loss surgery options. Here they can receive advice, council and encouragement before and after their weight loss surgery.
Bariatric Surgery Cost
Insurance coverages for gastric bypass cost and for gastric sleeve cost depends on the patient’s policy, their body mass index (BMI) and the presence of other medical conditions. Our insurance office can assist with these insurance questions and help you determine your exact insurance coverage.
