Switching to whole grains can help maintain a health weight

whole grain breadRecently, an article on this website suggested some dietary substitutions that can help maintain a healthy weight. One of those suggestions was substituting whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice and whole wheat flour for refined grains such as white bread, white rice and white flour. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition seems to confirm the value of whole grain substitution.

Researchers at the Tufts University Energy Metabolism Laboratory compared two groups of adults who were randomly assigned to eat a diet that included whole grains or one made up of refined grain products. The two groups each ate the same number of calories. After eight weeks, the whole grains group showed an increased metabolic rate suggesting that the extra fiber had a beneficial effect on metabolism and also changed the way other foods were digested.

This study alone does not prove that whole grains produce weight loss, but the researchers suspect that a high fiber diet does just that. A senior scientist at the Tufts University Energy Metabolism Laboratory estimated that the extra calories lost by those who ate whole grains were the equivalent of a brisk 30-minute walk each day.

Small changes like this one add up to big differences in your weight. Substitutions like whole grains for refined products are important, but the most important substitution you can make is in your thinking and attitude. You must substitute a “can do” attitude for a “put it off” mentality or “must accept” thinking. You do not have to accept obesity. Our Monthly Bariatric Forum Meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 5pm and is located in Dr. Birkedal’s Office at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center.

Make plans to attend the Forum in August.  This month’s meeting will be held on the 17th. You can find out about the options open to you, including a bariatric surgery procedure such as the gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. Laparoscopic surgery techniques have made weight-loss surgery a practical alternative for many people.

As always, our office staff can answer your questions about bariatric surgery or the other general surgery procedures we perform. Our professional staff offers both weight-loss surgery and non-surgical approaches to weight loss. If we can be of assistance, please call to schedule an appointment at one of our three offices in the Daytona, New Smyrna, and Palm Coast. We can be reached at (386) 231-3530.
