As If We Did Not Know

ObesityDoctors are like all people; we like to read or hear about new evidence that supports our old beliefs.  Sometimes this is a bad thing, because it strengthens misconceptions or outright fallacies; at other times, it serves a good purpose.

There was a great example of serving good purposes In the March Edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.  Preventive Medicine is the specialty of medical practice that focuses on the health of individuals and defined populations. Its goal is to protect, promote, and maintain health and wellbeing and to prevent disease, disability, and death.  Actually, all doctors (including bariatric surgeons) should practice preventive medicine to the greatest extent they can.

The subject of the Journal’s article was the huge benefit that comes from physical activity, even just a little physical activity. “Mortality Risk Reductions for Replacing Sedentary Time With Physical Activities” studied the effect of substituting just 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day in place of inactivity.  In this very large study of thousands of patients, that simple change resulted in a 45% reduction in mortality in the least active group.

Our blog has written often about the value of sensible physical activity. Our community is very fortunate to be served by the Advent Health Wellness Center. The professionals at this outstanding organization can guide you to a safe and effective program of physical exercise and activity. They have the latest equipment, and they work hand-in-hand with the doctors in the Bariatric and Weight Care program at AdventHealth of Daytona Beach.
