Breast Cancer Treatment, Early Detection and IORT

breast cancer awarenessA mammogram is the most important screening test for breast cancer. Mammograms are extremely effective, and they can detect breast cancer as much as two years before the tumor can be felt by a patient or their doctor. Women who are at average risk of breast cancer should have a mammogram once a year after age 40 to 45. Women in a higher risk group should have yearly mammograms along with an MRI starting at age 30.

“IORT” or Intraoperative Radiation Therapy can provide an alternative to long term radiation therapy following some breast cancer surgeries. During IORT, the breast cancer treatment radiation is delivered as a concentrated dose of radiation to the area immediately surrounding the tissue removed in lumpectomy. The operating room team will include both the surgeon and a specialist in radiation oncology who is in charge of administering the breast cancer treatment. Working together, these two doctors strive to produce the best outcome for the patient.
