Fad Diets

Today’s press, television and internet sites are full of information about “miracle diets,” “new diet discoveries” and even “fat-burner pills.” Much of this information is misleading or just plain false, intended to sell some supplement, device or book. The medical professionals in bariatric clinics and weight loss surgeons are likely to hear about these new discoveries often.

Over the years, we have heard about the Scarsdale diet, the L.A. diet, the South Beach diet, the Adkins diet, the Paleo diet, the Air Force diet, even the “Drinking Man’s diet.” Many of these schemes concentrate on the role of carbohydrates in weight control, presenting sometimes factual, sometimes misleading information. Did you know that there is one type of carbohydrate that is an underused part of many diets? It is called FIBER, and you can read about it in “The Facts About Carbohydrates.”

Right now, why not plan to get serious about your weight loss program? A good start would be to attend the next meeting of our Monthly Bariatric Support Group. This meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 5pm. It’s located in Dr. Birkedal’s Office at the Daytona AdventHealth Medical Center. The May session will be on Thursday May,16.

If you have any question about these meetings or any other area included in bariatric surgery or general surgery, please contact our office. You may use Contact Dr Birkedal or phone us at (386) 210-9794. Our offices, located in Daytona, New Smyrna and Palm Coast are all part of the AdventHealth Medical Group.
