“First in War, First in Peace…”

obese womanThat famous quote came from a eulogy written about George Washington. It has been applied to many of the good people and good qualities of Americans in general, but we are also first in some other things. In which of these categories do you think Americans lead the world?

  1. Number of books read each year
  2. Giving to charities
  3. Time spent watching TV
  4. Traffic accidents per millions of miles driven
  5. Fast food consumption

Statements B, C and E are correct. Giving to charity is a great thing, but too much time spent watching TV and too many cheeseburgers are not!  A study done in Europe (societies much like our own) found that a combination of three behaviors were especially potent when it comes to gaining weight. Those behaviors were:

  • Eating while watching TV.
  • Eating at fast-food restaurants.
  • Not planning the amount of food you’re going to eat.

Over time, these behaviors produce the epidemic of obesity and related disease we are facing today. If you have struggled with weight gain, “creeping obesity” and diets that fail, bariatric surgery may be an option. Do not discount this possibility if you have not been examined by qualified medical professionals.

Our practice in general surgery concentrates on weight loss surgery. If you have any question about laparoscopic bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve or gastric bypass), please contact our office.
