Holiday weight gain

Holiday mealsChristmas is only a few days away and our office and staff wishes you and your family the happiest of holidays. Holiday meals, gatherings and parties are an important part of Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s and the entire holiday season. There is a chance to overeat or overindulge many times in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, and this now extends all the way to “Super Sunday.”

Generally, people overestimate the amount of weight they will gain during the holidays, but at the same time, they underestimate how long it will take to lose that pound or two. In the field of bariatric surgery, we see a lot of patients who have gained “just a pound or two” of holiday weight for three or four decades. That’s 60 or more pounds between the ages of 25 and 55. If you are worried about this “creeping obesity,” go back and read our article, “Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain.”

Weigh yourself before Thanksgiving Day every year. If you are any heavier on Super Sunday, take it off before Valentine’s Day! Do not let it creep up on you. If you need help or information about weight control, plan to attend the January Monthly Bariatric Support Group Meeting in Dr. Birkedal’s Office at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. This meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month (that will be January 17, 2019) at 5pm.

Please call our office at (386) 210-9794 for information about this meeting or any area included in general surgery. You may also use Contact Dr Birkedal.  Our offices, located in Daytona, New Smyrna and Palm coast are all part of the Florida Hospital Network.
