The danger of too much screen time

cell phone useOur blog has pointed to the fast-food business and the sugar industry as major culprits in the epidemic of obesity affecting America and the developed world.  We have been careless in not pointing to another factor, the one you are engaged in right now – screen time.

Health officials are more and more aware of this danger. An article in the journal Pediatrics focused on the problem in children, but it is almost certainly an equal problem in adults.  Here is what the study said:

“Screen media exposure is one of the best-documented causes of obesity in children and, likewise, obesity is one of the best-documented outcomes of screen media exposure. For the purpose of this review, screen media refers to content on any technology platform with a screen.”

That’s right, screen time has made being a couch potato easier, and it is a contributor to a big health problem – lack of exercise.  Think about how many hours you have spent passively browsing your smart phone, laptop or mobile device each day.
