What do you know about hernias?

Hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States. Each year, 600,000 to 700,000 inguinal hernia surgeries are done in the United States, making it one of the most common surgical procedures. Today, most hernia surgeries are laparoscopic, one-day procedures (patients visit a surgery center, have the procedure and return home all on the same day).

Pain and scarring is minimal and return to normal activity is rapid. After laparoscopic hernia surgery a patient can expect some soreness that usually lasts 24 to 48 hours, but they should be up and about the day after surgery and return to normal activities within a week. If a hernia is not treated, there can be serious consequences. No hernia will get better without surgery, although that surgery may be delayed under some circumstances.
