What in Heaven is Ghrelin?

ghrelinGhrelin (it sort of rhymes with heaven) is a hormone produced by the human endocrine system. Ghrelin is produced in cells located in the stomach, especially in an area called the fundus. When the stomach is empty (not stretched), ghrelin production increases, telling your brain that it is time to eat.

Slowly, doctors are beginning to understand the role ghrelin plays in obesity. We know that modern life has disrupted the hormonal system that should keep us in balance. Drive-through eating or “dashboard dining” has made it easy to quickly gobble down many more calories than needed. While it might be normal for your body feel hungry, it is not normal to consume so many calories so quickly.

You can read about ghrelin and the role it plays in metabolism in our past article, “The Hunger Hormone.” If you are having difficulty dealing with obesity, bariatric surgery may be an option. Only a full workup by a qualified physician can tell you for certain. Our general surgery practice concentrates on bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery). If you feel that this might be the situation, we are happy to evaluate your medical case.  Please use Contact Dr Birkedal or phone us at (386) 210-9794.
