Where Does Florida Rank?

If you tuned in Monday, you know that we promised to tell you where Florida ranked in the “Most Obese States” list. Our State comes in at number 35, meaning that 34 states are more obese than Florida! I guess that we can be relatively happy about this until we recall that, at 27% of Florida’s population medically obese, this is nothing to brag about.

One of the factors contributing to this poor performance is the underutilization of weight loss surgery. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery estimates that about 24 million Americans have severe obesity. A recent publication of the Society commented –

“Bariatric surgery remains one of the most underutilized treatments in America and there is great variability in its application because of barriers to access including insurance coverage, economic conditions and other factors. There is a great need to offer universal coverage for bariatric surgery so that treatment for a life-threatening disease is not determined by where you happen to live.”

Insurance coverage for weight loss surgery depends upon the patient’s medical policy and the circumstances specific to the patient. The insurance experts in our office can help you determine if weight loss surgery is covered under your insurance. Please do not hesitate to use their resources. If you have any question about the areas included in general surgery, especially bariatric surgery, please contact our office. You may use Contact Dr Birkedal or phone us at 386-210-9794. Our offices, located in Daytona, New Smyrna and Palm coast are all part of the AdventHealth Medical Group.
