Yoga and Weight Loss

yogaYoga does not burn calories as fast as walking, swimming or aerobic exercise does, but it can offer an activity that is both low impact and non-competitive. Even severely overweight people can practice many forms of yoga without fear of injuring joints, feeling self-conscious or appearing inferior to fitter competitors. Yoga can be done in small classes or in the privacy of your own home. Many people who were initially skeptical of yoga find that it can be ‘addictive’ because it relieves stress and increases feelings of well-being. If you would like to know more, read our article, “Yoga and Weight Loss.”

A good place to start is the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Weekly Gentle Yoga program. Don’t forget that the Monthly Bariatric Support Group Meeting is held on the 3rd Thursday of each month (Feb 21st) at 5pm. It’s located in Dr. Birkedal’s Office at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. Please contact us with any questions you may have about this meeting or about laparoscopic weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) or any other area included in general surgery. Our offices, located in Daytona, New Smyrna and Palm coast are all part of the AdventHealth Medical Group. Use Contact Dr Birkedal or phone the office at 386-210-9794.
