What Can Lap Band Surgery Do for Obese Patients?

Eustis Bariatric Surgery

Lap band surgery is just one of the specialized surgical procedures available to those individuals who seek out and qualify for weight loss surgery. Medical obesity is a threat to one's health; a threat not to be ignored. When non-surgical methods fail to decrease a medically obese patient's weight to an acceptable range, a doctor may recommend the patient consider surgical alternatives

Stomach surgery for weight loss may be recommended for patients who have:

  • Tried and failed to achieve target weight loss with diet, exercise and behavior modification.
  • Have a BMI (body mass index) of 35 to 40 and have an obesity related disease.
  • Have a BMI of 40 or more with or without 2 chronic diseases.

Dr. Christian Birkedal concentrates on bariatric weight loss procedures. He is a certified general surgeon skilled in lapband surgery, gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgeries. These procedures are tools to help medically obese patients take charge of their condition, to decrease their food intake and their weight, and to improve any obesity-related diseases.

Here, we focus on the details of lap band surgery.

Lap Band Surgical Procedure

The lap band procedure is performed using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic surgery, sometimes called keyhole surgery. During surgery, the surgeon places an adjustable weight loss band around the upper portion of the patient's stomach. After the patient is fully recovered from the procedure, the weight loss band is inflated and so "squeezes" or constricts the stomach. The band reduces the size of the stomach and the amount of food it can hold.

Eligibility Requirement and Dietary Changes

Lap Band Results

Although results vary, patients who strictly adhere to the lap band diet will reduce food consumption and thereby lose weight. These patients can lose a significant amount of excess weight, up to 50%, and may see an improvement in obesity-related diseases, like type 2 diabetes.

Lap Band Side Effects

Some patients who undergo lap band surgery experience side effects such as difficulty in swallowing and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). These are common lap band side effects and are remedied by the removal of the band. Lap band removal also serves to avoid any lap band complications.

Lap band surgery is a reversible procedure, unlike lap sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass which permanently alter the stomach.

How Much Does Lap Band Surgery Cost?

Many insurance policies cover some, or all, of the weight loss surgery cost. How much does lap band cost? Our in-office insurance experts help patients determine what, if any out-of-pocket expenses might be incurred for lap band surgery or for any of the weight loss procedures. Insurance coverage for the cost of lap band surgery typically depends on the patient's policy, an insurance company review, and the presence of any other medical problems.

Lap Band vs Gastric Sleeve

As noted above, lap band surgery has the advantage of being reversible. However, better long-term results are attained by the two non-reversible laparoscopic procedures, gastric sleeve, also called sleeve gastrectomy, and gastric bypass. Which procedure is best for a patient is decided after a thorough clinical analysis is conducted by the surgeon.

In addition to weight loss procedures, Dr. Birkedal also performs general surgery procedures including thyroid, gallbladder, hernia repair and varicose vein treatment. These and other services are offered throughout the east-central Florida area:

    • Lap band surgery, also called the lap band procedure (or the weight loss band).
