Lap Band Surgery in Mount Dora, Florida
Today, advances in weight loss surgical techniques have made it practical for many patients struggling with medical obesity, a condition that has become a serious public health treat. Dr. Christian Birkedal, a Florida certified general surgeon, uses laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques to perform safe and effective stomach surgery for weight loss. He concentrates on several bariatric procedures, including lapband surgery, gastric bypass, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Stomach surgery is reserved for certain patients and each case will have different medical implications. Generally, stomach surgery for weight loss may be recommended for patients who have tried to lose weight and failed using diet, exercise and behavior modification. They may have a BMI (body mass index) of 35 to 40 and have an obesity related disease such as type 2 diabetes. Or, they may have a BMI of 40 or more with or without the presence of 2 chronic diseases.
The Lap Band Surgical Procedure
The lap band procedure is performed using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic surgery, or keyhole surgery. During the procedure, a weight loss band is placed around the upper portion of the stomach. After a patient has recovered from surgery, this weight loss band is inflated in order to constrict the size of the stomach. This procedure is reversible, should the patient suffer from lap band complications.
Lap Band Results
After lap band surgery, patients who adhere strictly to the lap bad diet will lose a significant amount of excess weight. Results vary but some patients lose up to 50% of their excess weight. Those who significantly reduce their food intake could see improvements in other conditions related to medical obesity, such as type 2 diabetes. Lap band side effects sometimes occur. Two common conditions, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and difficulty in swallowing may require lap band removal.
The Lap Band Vs Gastric Sleeve
Lap band surgery is a reversible procedure, unlike lap sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass which permanently alter the stomach. However, better long-term results are attained by the two non-reversible procedures. The decision to use any stomach weight loss surgery can be made only by the expert evaluation of a doctor and is based on the needs and medical condition of the patient.
