Lap Band Surgery in Seville, Florida

Medical obesity is not only an issue of self-esteem or appearance, it is also a serious public health threat. Advances in medical technology have impacted the way bariatric surgeries are performed, and procedures for lap band surgery, lap sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass are now practical options for thousands of patients.

Dr. Christian Birkedal, a certified general surgeon, uses laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques to perform safe and effective stomach surgery for weight loss. These procedures, lapband surgery, lap sleeve gastrectomy and the gastric bypass, are tools used to help medically obese patients take charge of their condition, decrease their food intake, reduce excess weight, and improve any obesity-related diseases.

Eligibility Requirement and Dietary Changes

Who are Bariatric Surgery Patients?

Patients who are candidates for stomach surgery for weight loss, do more than just admit they struggle with medical obesity and its complications. They have tried and failed to take charge of the condition using measures such as diet, exercise, and behavior modification. Typically, their body mass index (BMI) falls into one of these categories:

  • 1. They have a BMI index range from 35 to 40 and they have an obesity related disease, such as type 2 diabetes.

  • 2. They have a BMI 40 and above and their physical condition may or may not include two chronic diseases.

The Lap Band Surgical Procedure

The lap band procedure uses the minimally invasive laparoscopic technique. An adjustable weight loss band is placed around the upper portion of the patient’s stomach. The weight loss band is adjustable so that, after the patient is recovered from surgery, it can be inflated to an extent that reduces or squeezes the stomach to a size that limits the size of the stomach. Since the stomach will hold less, the patient will eat less and lose their excess weight.

Lap Band Results

Results will vary from patient to patient, but patients who strictly follow the lap band diet will reduce food consumption and lose a significant amount of excess weight, sometimes up to 50%. With this significant drop in excess weight, patients may see an improvement in obesity related diseases. Common lap band side effects, such as difficulty in swallowing and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), may require lap band removal to remedy these lap band complications. Lap band surgery is a reversible procedure, unlike lap sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass which permanently alter the stomach.

The Lap Band Vs Gastric Sleeve

Lap band surgery has an advantage over other stomach surgery for weight loss options; it is reversible. Lap sleeve gastrectomy, and the gastric bypass, cannot be reversed; they permanently alter the stomach. However, these irreversible procedures offer better long-term results. Each patient and clinical situation is different; only expert evaluation can determine which surgery is best.
